ElectroSlot           E-400

7.11 ELECTROSLOT (E-SLOT)
7.11.1 Objective
To provide a silent flight class similar to 'Thermal Duration Soaring' but with electric  power replacing hand tow. Five flights are made and ALL FIVE FLIGHTS are to be  made with ONE INITIAL BATTERY CHARGE ONLY.
7.11.2 Model Characteristics
  (a) Maximum Surface Area 150 dm2 (2325 in2)
Maximum Flying Weight 5 Kilograms (11.023 lbs)
    Maximum Surface Loading 75 g /dm2 (24.51 oz / ft2)
    Minimum Surface Loading 12 g /dm2 (3.95 oz / ft2)
  (b) Power source must not exceed 7 NiCd or NiMH cells only.
  (c) Any type of motor may be used.
  (d) The motor run per round shall not exceed 60 seconds (1 min.).
7.11.3 Battery Charging
The Contest Director (CD) must ensure that cells are charged only before the first  round. Between rounds the aircraft or at least the power packs are to be impounded.
7.11.4 Organisation of Flying Slot
  (a) The flying order for the rounds shall be arranged in accordance with the radio frequencies in use to permit as many simultaneous flights as possible.
  (b) The flying order must be scheduled in multiples of five rounds sub-divided into time slots.
  (c) The flying order on a round by round basis shall be determined by a matrix system so that, as far as possible, each competitor flies against each of the other competitors at some stage of the competition.
  (d) Entry on the day of the contest will only be accepted if a vacant position is available.
  (e) A competition number must be allocated to each competitor and must be retained throughout the rounds.
  (f) Competitors are entitled to a minimum of 5 minutes preparation time which is counted from the moment he/she is called to take position at the designated launching area.
  (g) The organisers must indicate very positively the start of slot time both audibly and, if possible, visually.
  (h) The timekeeper(s) shall use two watches both of which shall be started on release of the model. One watch will be stopped and re-started as required to record the total 'motor ON time'. The other watch will be stopped at the termination of the flight.
  (i) The motor run can be used at any time during the slot but the pilot must state when the motor is switched on and when it is switched off.
  (j) The slot time shall be of exactly 15 (fifteen) minutes duration, followed by a 1 (one) minute penalty time.
  (k) Audible and, if possible, visual signals must be given when 10 (ten) minutes of the slot time have elapsed.
  (l) The end of the slot time must be very positively indicated both audibly and, if possible. visually. as for the start.
  (m) The end of the one minute penalty time must also be positively indicated. Any model still airborne at this time will score zero for the flight.
7.11.5 Landing
  (a) The landing targets shall comprise of a minimum of TWO 20 m diameter graduated circles. The graduations shall be in radius steps of 2 metres. Organisers will normally allocate particular frequencies to each circle.
  (b) The circles must be laid out in a line at right angles to the wind direction.
  (c) Competitors and officials (time-keepers) must remain on the upwind side of the landing circles during the landing process.
  (d) Competitors may only retrieve their models on completion of the landing, provided they do not impede other competitors and models.
  (e) The organisers will normally provide a landing target for each flyer in the slot.
7.11.6 Scoring
  (a) The flight will be timed from the moment of release until
    (i) The moment the model first touches the ground.
(ii) The moment the model first touches any object in contact with the ground.
(iii) The completion of the 15 minute slot time.
(iv) Motor run time , which must not exceed 60 seconds, to be included.
  (b) The flight score will be composed of ONE point for each FULL second of flight time.
  (c) A penalty of 1 point per second will be deducted from the flight score for overflying the end of the slot time for up to a maximum of one minute (the one minute penalty time).
  (d) A zero flight score will be recorded for overflying the end of the one minute penalty time.
  (e) A zero flight score will be recorded for a motor run more than 60 seconds (1 min.).
  (f) Landing Bonus:
A landing bonus will be awarded provided that the model comes to rest within the landing circle. The bonus will be calculated on the distance from the centre of the circle to the nearest point of the model such that
    (i) a distance of 2 m or less will score 50 points
    (ii) a distance between 2.01 m and 4 m will score 40 points
    (iii) a distance between 4.01 m and 6 m will score 30 points
    (iv) a distance between 6.01 m and 8 m will score 20 points
    (v) a distance between 8.01 m and 10 m will score 10 points
  (g) The competitor who achieves the highest aggregate of points, i.e. flight points plus landing bonus points less penalty points, will be awarded a corrected score of one thousand points for that slot.
  (h) The remaining competitors in that slot will be awarded corrected scores calculated as a proportion of the winner's score, i.e. the competitor's own flight score (including the landing bonus but excluding penalty points) multiplied by 1000 and divided by the slot winners flight score (including the landing bonus but excluding penalty points).
7.11.7 Final Classification
  (a) The competitors final score will be the aggregate of points for all rounds flown.
  (b) There will be no fly-off.
7.11.8 Timing (Additional to details in 7.11.4)
  (a) Each competitor shall be accompanied by a timer whose primary responsibility is to provide the CD with the flight and motor run times as previously described. The timer is to exercise particular care to start the stop watches at the launch of the model and not at the start of the timing slot.
  (b) As a secondary function, the timer may advise the contestant regarding the progress of the slot times and the performance of the other competitors.
  (c) Recorded times will be expressed in whole seconds, rounding up for the motor run and rounding down for the flight duration time.
  (d) The competition may be run by the use of an automatic slot timer The audible signals from such a timer at the commencement of, during, and at the conclusion of the slot are considered to satisfy 7.11.4 (g), (j), (k), (l) and (m).1"> Organisers may adopt an alternative procedure such that each individual timer times his competitor for a slot which starts when the model is launched within a ten second window announced by the CD. Remaining procedures are as indicated with each timer giving the appropriate signals to his competitor.
  (e) Competitors may not run their motors at any point between the CD's announcement that the slot is about to start and the signal that the slot has started.
7.11.9 ALL OTHER RULES ARE AS 'F3J - Thermal Duration Soaring' (Section 7 3.)
